God bless Creamfields! One of many destinations I haven’t yet made it to, certainly a spot on the list of “techno tourism”. After seeing the lineup announcement of Pryda Arena at this year’s festival at the end of August in Daresbury, Cheshire, UK for Bank Holiday Weekend, it would be a crime against the dance music lords not to go! Eric Prydz, Marco Carola, Adam Beyer, Maceo Plex, Scuba, Maya Jane Coles, George Fitzgerald and Fehrplay… wow, wow, wow. It’s interesting to even see such names packaged under Pryda Arena, with Marco Carola typically bolstering his own arrangement of this sort with Music On and acts that fall under his artist family.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Creamfields, and is sure to an unrivaled weekend of top notch electronic music. Oh, not to mention, Steve Angello will hosting a Size Matters stage with his clan, Annie Mac will do the same, as well as All Gone Pete Tong, Hed Kandi, Skream & Benga, Toolroom, Anjunabeats in association with Mixmag, and that doesn’t even cover the dual main stages… this is just Saturday’s lineup!

Sunday enlists David Guetta and Afrojack on the main stage with arenas hosted by Cream, Sebastian Ingrosso’s All Mixed Up, Richie Hawtin’s Enter., Tiesto’s Clublife, Laidback Luke’s Super You & Me and more. Friday warms up for the weekend with three silent disco events featuring Deniz Koyu, Claptone, Riva Starr, Russ Chimes and more.

All we can say… dance music euphoria. Head over to www.creamfields.com for more info.

As the city that invented Techno, we should expect Detroit to have a world class music festival and it does: Movement

As the city that invented Techno, we should expect Detroit to have a world class music festival and it does: Movement Festival. The Do’s & Dont’s on this list are guaranteed to add a little extra thrill to your Detroit techno time.

Do: Make friends with a homeless man.

Last year in Detroit, outside of the biggest liquor store-money order center-bodega I had ever seen, there was the coolest old man named Rico. A simple panhandle became a three day friendship with the storytelling man named Rico who had been residing in Detroit for years. We shared a small bottle of Malibu Black and chilled with him every morning before walking the rest of the way to the festival. This year, we hope to find Rico and we hope you find some locals who can educate you about Detroit and it’s techno past.

Don’t: Be Afraid of Detroit.

Answer the question to Claude Von Stroke’s trademark track Who’s afraid of Detroit? by saying “Not F**king Me!” If you are from an urban area such as New York City, you’ve got nothing to worry about, and if not, don’t be a puss. Go on down to the Motown Museum, look up spots shown in the recent documentary Detropia, and pick up some vinyl at the local record stores.

Do: Eat a Movement corn dog.

In the 1920′s the world was blessed with the invention of corn dogs. A hotdog covered in cornmeal batter and deep fried to perfection is the best way to whet your appetite (you’ll sweat the pounds off dancing anyway!). Buy a corn dog ($6/$7) at the festival, layer it with some mustard and ketchup and exit the festival to where the local water vendor’s await. The money spent on the corn dog will be offset by the $1 water you chug down and the scrumptious, meaty, bready delight going on inside your mouth.

Don’t: Do Shrooms with Molly

A strange and constant thing I saw last year in Detroit was the never ending amount of shady dealers outside the festival. You can see these shady-Mcmuffins while on your way to GreekTown or by just walking by the festival in the downtown area. Once you hear, “Shroooooms and Molly, Molly and Shroooooms” take that as a no-go for buying some sketchball drugs.

Do: Cool out under the ginormous fountain.

The Hart Plaza fountain is where you go to cool down. The water will definitely help when the weather gets too hot. It is also such a beautiful piece of architecture that makes you feel like you are being rained on by a spectacular spacecraft E.T. gave his son.

Don’t: Forget your passport or any past felonies if you are trying to go to Canada for cheaper cigarettes.

Oh, the Canadian border is full of excitement. If you are a young American, consider yourself screwed. The Canadians in Canada are the sweetest things but the ones bordering the country can really put you through hell. So for your sanity’s sake take some precautions such as don’t even think about trying to get across if you have a felony and don’t forget what’s in your car because they will literally strip it down to the metal. Buy a pack in Detroit where you can stay and enjoy the festival without the option of lost time, jail time, and a major border headache.

Do: Visit the Greek Town District.

Greek Town is an area in downtown district of Detroit filled with fun bars and great restaurants. the neighborhood was taken over by Greek immigrants in the early 1900′s and is a historic part of Detroit. Along with the bars and restaurants, there is also the beautiful St.Mary’s Church and a Greek Town Casino if you’re trying to get lucky.

Do: Check out artists you havent seen before.

This year there are artists that everyone is aware of like Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Magda, Nina Kraviz, Digweed, and so on. But there are many artists that are on the forefront of the electronic music scene that don’t have brand name recognition. Festivals were made for music discovery–so get out there and discover.

Do: Download the Movement App.

The free Movement application has to be the best festival app thus far. The app includes 6 interactive features: Lineup - Where you see all 115 artists, times and schedules. Schedule - Where you add the artists you want to see, their times and stages to your personal schedule. Finder - See your location or find another location for any of the stages, resting areas, the riverfront, fountain and center of hart plaza. Map- The map that usually gets trampled on and left behind on the festival floors is conveniently located within this feature. Camp- Community Arts Moving Projects shows you artists who have submitted their works to be viewed this year at Movement. Check out the artists and their works with this feature. Party- A great reminder of all the after parties one each day instead of crumpling party flyers in your shorts.

Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy Movement’s Memorial Day weekend extravaganza!

With the enigmatic album release now finally behind us, easily one of the most hyped of our time, there’s more. Yes, it seems like it never stops, but we aren’t mad. Daft Punk‘s Random Access Memories told a story well before there was any music to share, and that just continues with news of an additional track titled “Horizon” was released in Japan only as a bonus track on the album. With R.A.M. already diverging from what we are used to from the legendary duo, “Horizon” goes even further to do so, as it lacks the disco influence found on many of the album’s other track. An ambient, chill-out track, “Horizon” while different, delivers in a way we haven’t seen from the robots – an emotional composition that gives off maybe the most human element of any track off the album. They are human after all.

Transcending time with Daft Punk – the men, the visage, the logo and ultimately… the music

When news hit the web that legendary producer Giorgio Moroder would be playing his first-ever DJ set in New York,

When news hit the web that legendary producer Giorgio Moroder would be playing his first-ever DJ set in New York, an explosion of sorts occurred. The 73-year old Italian producer and songwriter, deemed by many “The Father of Disco”, has left his mark on the musical world, having produced records for Donna Summer and most recently, collaborating with Daft Punk on Random Access Memories. Moroder’s legend that transcended generations, and it’s amazing to witness such history evolve into a persona revered by the dance music kids in 2013.

As part of The Red Bull Music Academy Series, Moroder played at Brooklyn’s new music mecca, Output, where François K, T. Williams and Benjamin Damage would join him. Before treating the fans who made it inside with a live performance of the collab with Daft Punk, “Giorgio By Moroder”, the fair-haired producer, now DJ, shared some words with the attendees. Explaining how how he picked up the guitar and bass at 15 years old and grew up in a small town to getting out into the big world, moving to Munich and working with a composer in Berlin, Moroder jogs through how he got to where he is before the lights and disco ball synced perfectly with the funky sounds riveting through Output’s top notch soundsystem. Watch the video and you’ll see. The crowd went wild when Moroder busted out Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, fittingly so. In an age where much of popular music feels overtly modern, this just feels right.

My favorite month of the year has arrived and it’s not because winter has finally been buried in a dark

My favorite month of the year has arrived and it’s not because winter has finally been buried in a dark hole or the drunken fact that all the outdoor beer gardens have reopened or even the awesome amount of rooftop parties that begin to sprout out in mass quantities like dandelions at your local park. The end of May is better then all three of those things because it is the time of music glutton. Thousands of people from all over the world gather in Detroit City also known as the home of techno. The 3 day Movement celebration of techno, house, minimal, nudisco, experimental and every electronic subgenre to be known by mankind pours over Detroit and leaves us all sticky with the aftermath of music goo we all know we like, even if it is a bitch to get off.

Having gone for the first time last year and becoming absolutely OBSESSED with DEMF, you have to be thankful that America has at least one festival to be fully proud of in relation to both prices ($80-$110 for a 3 day pass) and the fact that the people at Movement really advocate for everyone to have a good time. A great festival is one with a line up that has you mapping out the time slots but also mapping out the events to attend after the daily festivities. During DEMF there are multiple parties that are available for a variation of ages and prices and are just as important to attend as the festival itself. The six after parties listed below are just a few going on each day.

Saturday:

Circoloco Celebrates Arthur Russell- OneBeat released a piece solely dedicated to this year’s Circo Loco party which is held at the usual indoor/outdoor venue TV Lounge, last year Damian Lazarus played for hours, Jamie Jones and Davide Squillace. This year we have Ryan Elliot, Russ Yallop, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss and 13 more artists (even more to be announced). This circo loco will also include art installations and recordings of the late and great Arthur Russell, a pioneer behind underground electronic disco in the mid 70’s and 80’s. So kick off the festival with Circo Loco and leave the place looking like the clown in all their flyers but less cracked out.

The party is already a must with Radio Slave’s craft and Marcel’s dark approach. You can show face and dance through the techno showdown.

In celebration of the 50th episode of his Fanfare radio show on June 1st, Thomas Gold has added an extra hour to the broadcast and is allowing his fans to handpick the tracks that will be featured. Voting has begun on Facebook with a selection of over 70 tracks that have dropped throughout the radio show’s lifetime. Currently, Thomas Gold’s “Sing2Me” is dominating the number one spot of most desired songs followed by his remixes of Miike Snow’s “The Wave” and OneRepublic’s “Feel Again”, but there is plenty of time for that to change over the next two weeks.

In addition to the airing of Fanfare 50 on Sirius XM in North America and RadioFG internationally, the podcast will be available through iTunes on June 4th. Be sure to keep an eye out on Twitter at 12 PM Eastern Time on June 5th as Thomas Gold will be using the #Fanfare50 hashtag to quick-fire questions and reward his fans with a wide variety of special prizes for fifty minutes!

With artists such as Jeff Mills, Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson at its helm, the city has given birth to a contagious phenomenon felt across the globe, Detroit Techno. Comprised of its own unique styling, it’s a type of techno that characterizes the first techno productions by Detroit-based artists during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Amazingly, 30 some odd years later, Detroit Techno is thriving, having been exported across the globe to electronic dance music’s most sacred places: Ibiza, Berlin, Barcelona and far, far beyond.

Thus, today marks a very special day for the city, as Detroit’s Mayor, Dave Bing, has signed an official proclamation starting that today is the official start of Detroit Techno Week! embracing the city’s Movement Electronic Music Festival that has taken place at Hart Plaza every Memorial Day Weekend since 2000! Now it’s even more opportune to partake in the revelry, the ring of Detroit Techno Week is pretty nifty.

This Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27, the legendary Movement Festival is taking over Detroit. Featuring five stages and some of the coolest and most-skilled DJs from around the world, this year’s festival is one for the ages. In honor of Movement our friend Rich Guerrero has prepared an hour-plus soundcloud set to get your earbuds tingling and hips shakin’. Says Rich

I mixed things up a bit by choosing an artist from each stage on each day of the festival. Some of the stages, such as the Beatport stage, are stacked with good DJs so I weighed the options and picked a few tracks from my favorite performers. I recommend you all check out some if not all of the artists featured on this playlist, even if only for a minute. A lot of great artists are slotted at the same times, so your best bet is to jump around and take in as much great music as you can. Be sure to catch them at the afterparties as well. Indulge in Detroit–it’s not often that you get such a high concentration of spectacular DJs and producers in a span of 3 days.

Get in the mood with this playlist as you plan your schedule–it won’t be easy!

DJ’s, dance music, and friends are the first things that will pop into anyone’s head when they hear ‘EDC’. One word they won’t think about is ‘charity’, although they should. With Electric Daisy Carnival New York having just wrapped, it’s the perfect time to shed some light on the philanthropic projects that it has supported.

Insomniac Events, the company that produces the Electric Daisy Carnival and a slew of other events, recently launched the Charitable Giving Initiative, which donates money directly from their ticket sales. For every ticket sold to EDC, one dollar is donated to childrens’ art and education charities and ten dollars are donated for every person on the guest lists.

“A critical part of Insomniac’s mission is to leverage the support of our loyal fans to make contributions to deserving organizations that help provide unique and vital services to communities throughout the U.S.”– Pasquale Rotella, Insomniac Events CEO

In 2011, Insomniac donated $75,000 to organizations in Las Vegas, and over $150,000 to communities all over the United States. In 2012, Insomniac announced they had donated approximately $300,000, all collected from festival ticket sales, to charities around the U.S such as the Red Cross, Rock the Vote, Clark County School-Community Partnership Program, the Injured Police Officer’s Fund, and the Speedway Children’s Charity.

These efforts show that Insomniac is able to please us visually and aurally but speak to our hearts emotionally as well. Not only did Electric Daisy Carnival attendees have the time of their lives over theweekend, but they also contributed to their community. Going out to have fun, hear the music, join the crowd, feel the energy – while simultaneously helping out those in need–now that’s an experience.
