Detroit holds a very special place in the hearts of techno and electronic dance music enthusiasts, and that’s to say the very least. With artists such as Jeff Mills, Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson at its helm, the city has given birth to a contagious phenomenon felt across the globe, Detroit Techno. Comprised of its own unique styling, it’s a type of techno that characterizes the first techno productions by Detroit-based artists during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Amazingly, 30 some odd years later, Detroit Techno is thriving, having been exported across the globe to electronic dance music’s most sacred places: Ibiza, Berlin, Barcelona and far, far beyond.

Thus, today marks a very special day for the city, as Detroit’s Mayor, Dave Bing, has signed an official proclamation starting that today is the official start of Detroit Techno Week! embracing the city’s Movement Electronic Music Festival that has taken place at Hart Plaza every Memorial Day Weekend since 2000! Now it’s even more opportune to partake in the revelry, the ring of Detroit Techno Week is pretty nifty.

This Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27, the legendary Movement Festival is taking over Detroit.  Featuring five stages and some of the coolest and most-skilled DJs from around the world, this year’s festival is one for the ages.  In honor of Movement our friend Rich Guerrero has prepared an hour-plus soundcloud set to get your earbuds tingling and hips shakin’.  Says Rich

I mixed things up a bit by choosing an artist from each stage on each day of the festival. Some of the stages, such as the Beatport stage, are stacked with good DJs so I weighed the options and picked a few tracks from my favorite performers. I recommend you all check out some if not all of the artists featured on this playlist, even if only for a minute. A lot of great artists are slotted at the same times, so your best bet is to jump around and take in as much great music as you can. Be sure to catch them at the afterparties as well.  Indulge in Detroit–it’s not often that you get such a high concentration of spectacular DJs and producers in a span of 3 days.

DJ’s, dance music, and friends are the first things that will pop into anyone’s head when they hear ‘EDC’.  One word they won’t think about is ‘charity’, although they should.  With Electric Daisy Carnival New York having just wrapped, it’s the perfect time to shed some light on the philanthropic projects that it has supported.

Insomniac Events, the company that produces the Electric Daisy Carnival and a slew of other events, recently launched the Charitable Giving Initiative, which donates money directly from their ticket sales. For every ticket sold to EDC, one dollar is donated to childrens’ art and education charities and ten dollars are donated for every person on the guest lists.

In 2011, Insomniac donated $75,000 to organizations in Las Vegas, and over $150,000 to communities all over the United States. In 2012, Insomniac announced they had donated approximately $300,000, all collected from festival ticket sales, to charities around the U.S such as the Red Cross, Rock the Vote, Clark County School-Community Partnership Program, the Injured Police Officer’s Fund, and the Speedway Children’s Charity.

These efforts show that Insomniac is able to please us visually and aurally but speak to our hearts emotionally as well. Not only did Electric Daisy Carnival attendees have the time of their lives over theweekend, but they also contributed to their community. Going out to have fun, hear the music, join the crowd, feel the energy – while simultaneously helping out those in need–now that’s an experience.

Many producers use Soundcloud to release previews of their upcoming productions.  Last week, Bingo Players posted a full version of their forthcoming track “Buzzcut”, but they’ve taken its promotion to an unprecedented level.  Sampling a little over a minute of the song, this is one of the greatest light shows on earth!  Using Emazing Lights‘ programmable eLite Matrix chips and notorious white gloves, a mysterious glover seduces the stunning and vibrant Melanie Iglesias through liquid tunnels,  finger rolls and a plethora of colors.  Enough talk though, watch the semi-not-safe-for-work video below and catch my synopsis after the break.  Enjoy!

Paul and Maarten have certainly made a name for themselves in producing pure bangers.  The synths pulsate throughout the build, creating a very grooving melody.  As the track begins to loop, your foot will definitely begin tapping the floor in anticipation for the onslaught of bass that is guaranteed from the Dutch duo.  The drop is heavy and very commanding.   Supported by the count “1, 2, 3, GO!”, it influences the listener to stop whatever they are doing and jump uncontrollably.  Don’t even get me started on the star of this video.  Melanie is gorgeous and her bubbly expressions emphasize how powerful and mesmerizing a light show can truly be.  To see more of the starlet, visit her website or catch her on MTV’s Guy Code and Girl Code.  ”Buzzcut” will be available through Hysteria Records on May 20th.

Light shows have become a growing form of art in EDM culture and a staple of entertainment at any show you may attend.  Practiced by thousands, gloving has become an international expression and continues to expand as new moves and techniques are created everyday.  Although you may not find Ms. Iglesias hypnotized by a light show in the crowd, those who attend the Governors Beach Club on June 16th will definitely have the chance to hear “Buzzcut” dropped live by Bingo Players for the first time in the Tri-State area!  Tickets are on sale now

As the sun set on May 11^th a menagerie of Gotham’s weirdest and wildest creatures united under one roof, speaking in many tongues, yet fluent in the universal language of music.  The occasion was BABEL’s inaugural carnival at Marquee New York.  The disparate tribes of New York were hosted by Wael Mechri-Yver of Paris’ infamous Cirque Bonheur nightclub and Orazio Rispo.

Says Wael “Our goal with BABEL New York was to bring different crowds together that usually never meet, the Brooklynites, the burners, the gays and straights, the Manhattan socialites—bring them together around a party like they used to do in the clubs of the 90′s.  The next one will be even crazier for sure now that we know people loved it!”

Babel was a smashing success, judging by the line around the block and the fact that the house was still packed at 5 A.M.  If you missed it you should be sorry.  Rare is such a unique and boundary-breaking spectacle.  The music was provided by Julio Santo Domingo, Orazio Rispo, and Thugfucker who crafted a legendary set that defies any attempt at description.  Have no fear though BABEL will be back and OneBeat will be there with New York’s finest party people in all their freaky glory.

Following our ‘Pump up’ playlist that hopefully helped us get through this week, we put together a weekend playlist that you can bump on your way to Citi Field. The playlist features music from some of the headlining artists such as ATB, Headhunterz, Richie Hawtin, Porter Robinson, The Bloody Beetroots, Crizzly, as well as some new faces in the electronic music scene that will be performing this year under the Discovery Project.

EDC New York also released the map around the venue, so make sure you know your way around and plan ahead for the sets you wish to see in order to maximize your experience! Also, don’t forget to try some of the carnival rides, and keep in mind where the medical/first aid sections, restrooms, and FREE water stations are in case of an emergency. Lately the Carl Cox and Friends Arena has become an integral aspect of U.S. festivals including EDC New York, EDC Las Vegas, and Ultra Music Festival.  This year, across UMF 15’s two weekends, the iconic Mega Structure hosted four days of the Carl Cox and Friends Arena featuring amazing sets from Carl Cox himself, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, John Digweed, Fatboy Slim, Luciano, Sven Väth and many more.

With the release of the EDC NY schedule on Monday, it is confirmed that Carl Cox will be bringing the invasion back for the second round of Electric Daisy’s east coast event.   The neonGARDEN tent just wouldn’t be the same without the animated ringleader and his cadre of music makers.  Saturday, May 18^th, will showcase the finest deep house beats from the likes of DJ QU & Jon Rundell, the clash of Soul Clap VS Wolf + Lamb, Art Department, Loco Dice and of course, Carl Cox.

It will be hard deciding which DJs to see throughout Saturday, but Carl Cox and Loco Dice will be delivering five hours of deep house funk.  Loco Dice will be playing from six to eight followed by two hours of Carl Cox capped off by a back to back set from these two legends which is sure to be the highlight of Electric Daisy New York.  Cox in the house!

Digitalism and Toolroom Records have a nice little history together, dating back to “Zdarlight” and the massive remix from Fedde Le Grand and Deniz Koyu that made dancefloors bustle in 2012. Now, Digitalism is back with two big-time remixes for Toolroom Records to commemorate the renowned label’s 10-year anniversary, of which the first comes in the form of a banging indie dance number – Bloc Party “Truth” (Digitalism Remix) which is out now. June 3rd will see the release of the second remix where Digitalism will rework The Rapture.

Set to embark on a global audience right before festival season kicks off, this tune mends two legendary forces in the indie scene and the result is one to savor. “Truth” comes off Bloc Party’s current album Four and has seen shelf life as a hit single, now seeing even more with Digitalism’s remix that packs in synths and electronic textures, perfectly working in Bloc Party lead singer Kele’s vocals.

BLK Market Membership has been keeping things real in New York City since 2006. DJ/Business man Taimur Agha who happens to be the man behind the awesome Bandwagon podcasts which have included tINI, Bill Patrick, Reboot, Francis Harris, Butane, and many more can also be seen fixing up the vinyl we buyers sometimes leave around at the oh-so alluring Halcyon record shop where he works as the shops’s head buyer and A&R maestro.  Teaming up with DJ Fahad Haider, BLK Market steers away from repetitivity of having just one constant venue for artists to perform at. Instead, they spice things up by choosing new locations that bring out an eccentric group of individuals who want to be a part of the comfort and chillness that is associated with the market parties.

There’s no barricade blocking the DJ from partygoers and no super expensive drink prices which really dials down the negative vibes associated with New York’s electronic music scene. Thanks to Taimur and Fahad we have a steady motion of sparkling artists such as Nina Kraviz, Ellen Allien, Livio & Roby, Memek, Marco Carola, DJ Koze and Alexi Delano to name a few. The most recent artist to play a market party was Matthew Dekay closing out a wonderful daytime rooftop party equipped with a very entertaining light-squared dance floor last Sunday.

In honor of BLK Market’s seven year run, they will be hosting the official EDC New York after party with Detroit’s star pupil, the one and only Mr. Seth Troxler (VisionQuest). It seems only right for this celebratory bash to be held in the oh so Berlin-influenced Output venue that electronic music lovers have been standing strong behind since its opening just five months ago. It will take place on Saturday night and include not just the main room but an additional room for an additional six artists. On the main floor you will have Seth, Taimur and Fahad while in the panther room there will be veteren Daniel Bell, ever-growing Willie Graff and foreign novel Karina. It’s practically two dope shows for the price of one. Taimur and Fahad will spill sexy, deep tech all over your springtime attire while Seth takes you through all the extremes of electronica, adding his funky minimalistic tendencies to the equation. 

For all the right reasons, become a member of the BLK Market. You must admit, the name alone sounds enticing.

Since June 2012, Insomniac Events has sponsored an project to raise awareness about upcoming artists, aptly titled the Discovery Project.  The goal of Discovery Project is to “give a voice to undiscovered talent and open the door for those striving for greater exposure.”  Since March, local artists have been able to submit a track and a 30-minute mix for the opportunity to perform at this year’s Electronic Daisy Carnival in New York.  The winners were announced on May 14. You can check out these six DJs and many more at the Wide Awake Art Car on Saturday.

Chomstars – Silo

Chomstars is an electro-house trio hailing from New York and Los Angeles. Colin Youngwall, Jordan Hewitt, and Nate Martorano won the FromDJs4DJs mix contest in 2012 and performed on top of the Viceroy Hotel in Miami. They have also made bootlegs of “Starlight” by Muse and “Ladi Dadi” by Steve Aoki & Wynter Gordon. “Silo” is a solid electro-house track with heavy synths and a tasteful melodic interlude.

Cy Kosis – Falling

Queens native and Los Angeles resident Jamaal Taylor, aka Cy Kosis, has been hard at work refining his electro influenced trap style of production. Falling is a bugged out electro-trap song with robotic vocals and an extended build up that will leave EDC-goers quaking in their moonboots

femmeBot – Sun Dawn

Making her mark as this year’s only female winner, Sarah Eschner, alias femmeBot, will be bringing her electro-house stylings to the Wide Awake Art Car stage. Classically trained in piano, violin, and voice, femmeBot’s debut track won her this competition. “Sun Dawn” is a bouncy electro-house track with a whiff of Wolfgang Gartner. With a 4-track EP set to drop this summer, you can expect big things from this Denver native.

Mark Keyo – Forward Momentum

Mark Keyo is a Trance and Progressive DJ based in Orange County, California. Keyo has produced a variety of original tracks and mashups featured on international radio shows such as Paul Oakenfold’s Planet Perfecto Radio among others.  Forward Momentum is an uplifting trance-influenced progressive house tune.

Static & Bass – Magnetic Sunrise

Since combining forces in 2012, the New York-based Static & Bass has been featured at premier venues such as Pacha and Webster Hall. Currently fulfilling a residency at New York’s District 36 Static & Bass has performed at numerous parties and will be bringing their blend of progressive house to EDC. Magnetic Sunrise is a hard hitting yet melodic track that sounds like it was taken right out of a nightclub in Tron.

Festiva – Sancudo

San Francisco based groove and bass specialist Festiva already has 13 tracks under his belt with labels such as Silvana Records, Selective Music, and Deux Minds Records. His releases have been supported by major players such as Hernan Catteneo, Markus Schulz, and Dave Seaman. Sancudo is a funky house track that falls on the darker side of the spectrum.
